Bucking the trend in a slow retail construction environment, the Mendota Plaza shopping center in Mendota Heights is getting a major makeover.

Mendota Heights, Minn. ( April 30, 2010 ) St. Paul, Minn.-based Paster Enterprises announced Thursday that construction is now underway on the Mendota Plaza redevelopment.

The Mendota Plaza overhaul by Paster Enterprises has been set back by the slow economy and by environmental contamination found on the site.

The annual Halloween night bonfire at Mendota Plaza, Highway 110 and Dodd Road, has been a tradition for over 30 years, and despite plans to renovate and expand Mendota Plaza, this year will be no different.

Groundbreaking will culminate a process that has taken over two years of negotiations and back and forth between the city and developers.

Redeveloped Plaza to offer new shopping, dining and recreation opportunities

The Mendota Heights City Council moved forward with the redevelopment at its meeting Tuesday, Jan. 20, approving 5-0 resolutions for rezoning, a wetlands permit, a conditional use permit, a preliminary plat and a preliminary planned unit development.

Developers received the green light last week to break ground on the project at Dodd Road and Highway 110, which has taken months if not years of planning to win over the Mendota Heights City Council and Planning Commission.

From a bleak white strip mall into an elegant commercial destination, Mendota Plaza has been approved for its extreme makeover.

The Mendota Heights City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved preliminary plans to spruce up the strip mall by adding shops, offices and homes on the 21-acre site south of Minnesota 110 and east of Dodd Road.

The details of a proposed 100-unit housing development to accompany future upscale retail shopping at Mendota Plaza on Dodd Road and Highway 110 remain too vague for the Mendota Heights City Council.

Walgreens Co. and Paster Enterprises, based in St. Paul, have agreed to a long term for a free standing out-lot building at the company’s Mendota Plaza shopping center in Mendota, Minn.

The Mendota Heights City Council members reviewed a detailed presentation of the look and feel of a proposed Mendota Plaza expansion at their meeting Nov. 18.

Paster wants to improve its 21-acre site at 750 Highway 110 into a development of 100,000 square feet for retail, and future space for housing, office and daycare.

While the Mendota Plaza redevelopment isn't ready to set sail, plans seem to be floating in the right direction.

A creek, trails, traffic and clustering of buildings remained the key issues that the council discussed for three hours.
